There are an estimated 250,000 Somalis living in the UK.�But the real figure may be higher as many Somalis with Dutch residence permits and passports are believed to have moved to the UK because of the higher benefits paid here compared to Holland.
Unemployment amongst Somali men is believed to be around 65%. As you’ll see from the diagram, this is many times higher than any other ethnic group. In fact it’s so far off the scale that I haven’t been able to include it (click on chart to see more clearly):
If we just play with a few imaginary figures: let’s assume that the 250,000 Somali population includes 60,000 men of working age and that of these, 65% (39,000)�are each�claiming about �20,000 a year in benefits (unemployment, jobseekers’ allowance, housing benefits, child benefits, council tax benefits and so on) for themselves and their families. If we could bring the unemployment rate for these Somali men down from 65% to the 15% for all black Africans, then another 30,000 Somali men would be in work� and we’d be paying around �600m less a year in benefits
The problems with the Somali community are not just in the high levels of unemployment. In our schools just 33% of Somali students passed five GCSEs, compared with 59% for students from other African communities and 80% for Chinese students.
The handwringing, socially-responsible, politically-correct Guardian blames the British government for the problems with the Somali community�claiming�it is�responsible for�“the immense harm caused by this continuing social dislocation” and “the figures for educational attainment of Somali students are shameful for a government which prides itself on its commitment to equal opportunities” and “the government needs to recognise the Somali community is a resource to this country, not a problematic burden”.
But a cynic might wonder whether the problems caused by high unemployment and low educational achievement amongst Britain’s Somalis could possibly maybe perhaps have something to do with the cultural attitudes of the Somalis themselves. After all, many other ethnic groups have come to Britain and even thrived here.

I live next to a somalian woman. Everything is fine until she starts drinking ( she is a hiqab wearing muslim ). Then the shouting and various other noises begin. Stamping about the place. Agressively shouting at the top of her lungs. Last night there was a group of her friends shouting and carrying on until 9.00Am in the morning. I have asked her over 10 times to keep the noise down after 11pm. Forget about that, she has only got out of bed and had breakfast by then. I have heard her through the wall, threatening me and saying she doesn’t give a s**t about me and will f**k me up. It has affected my life so badly. I am a home owner so it is hard to move. There is a housing association house next door. What a nightmare. I try and take each person as they come, but i am noticing a bit of a pattern here..
Everything was fine until thle late 90s and then the Somalian people arrived. My won parents arrived here in the late 70s so I know the effects of racism.
But mak no mistake,the Somalains are a different kettle of fish altogether, they will not work, are rude, have no willingness to learn, better themselves or work. Instead they use up the education/NHS/Benefits system to the full, These people are sucking the goodness out the land.
Will happily and openly deal drugs, and turn a thriving area into a ghetto, after seeing these people in action, Im all for limiting the benefit system and making these people earn there own money, instead of sucking the blood out of others.

Have travelled extensively in eastern ethiopia and somaliland and to be honest from what I have seen the somali culture is deeply ingrained in the everyday use of qat a drug as strong and potently om comparable to cocaine, they hardly appear to be very dynamic , of course there are Dr’s , lawyers etc and people working but generally the majority don’t .
not so very long ago I was in Hounslow West London where I was invited into an international telephone exchange to chew qat with the local somalians, after half an hour a somalian man appeared, enthusing over the virtues of being in england and his exact words were “england is a great country everything is for free”, and while there are always exceptions for me they are from a lawless lazy undisciplined and backward culture, sorry if my frank honesty from experience upsets, anybody but honesty is the only way to help in the long term! !

I did not have an opinion on this before reading article. I do feel that to be heard you must not be rude and stick to the facts. It does seem that the culture would lead someone to feel that not working and contributing to society is ok for 65% of Somalis. It must be frustrating to working Somalis to be linked to this. Is is inevitable that with such numbers abusing Britain’s hospitality the entire ethnic group will be looked upon unfavourably which of course in unfair.
It does mean of course genuine and much needed productive Somalis are refused access to Britain. It may well be the case in the future non British citizens will receive no benifits as is the case in many countries in the world. This is the only way for genuine Somalis who want to work and live in Britain would be welcome and not be looked on in a poor light.

We live in west London( lol not the posh bit). and literally parts of it are full of Somalians. These people don’t work, don’t learn English, have free houses, are given cars and way more. The rest of us not only pay for these people but are not given anything or could not afford what they have no matter how hard we worked.

Being Somali myself, I’m not interested in criticising or labelling the other comments here. Whether or not you’re Somali yourself or have a prejudice against them, I think we can all agree that these figures need to improve for the benefit of our society as a whole – in that, we’re united.
But let me point something out in regards to the comparisons to other ethnicities: these statistics largely refer to 1st generation Somali’s who arrived here in the early 90s. To what extent is this a fair comparison to e.g. the Bangladeshi community or overall Black community in Britain?
There was an in-depth report published by the Open Society Foundation in 2014 about Somali’s in Britain and the re-emerging theme in the analysis of barriers/causes is language. Most of the men sought labour work when they arrived whilst the women remained at home raising several children. Neither had the language skills, or time to go to English speaking courses because of their parental responsibilities. These women would eventually struggle to find work that required basic language and IT skills. Ultimately, they stopped pursing it.
Somalia is one of the poorest country along with Eriteria. There people are very arrogant. Do they not know they live off other people’s sweat and blood. They are all asylum seekers so they get help as soon as they arrive in the western world. They have never had to look for accommodation. They’re presence in the western world is really heartbreaking. Send them back.

Race is real, we are not all the same; these people have very low IQs (avg. 75) so they barely function in the way that most British people do and its like having 1000s of kids in adult bodies in our society who are in effect at the same level of people with down syndrome, however because physically they do not display the same traits, this is the level that many Somalian’s are operating at. This is the reason they have so many children, don’t work, invloved in crime, fail at school, etc, you’re talking about a race that exists at such a low level that they simply cannot cope with an advanced society, so bringing them here sets them up to fail and causes HUGE costs in so many ways for the host nation. Just to clarify one point in case some people don’t get it; bell curve means that ‘most’ are in the 75 iq range, so you will still find teachers, doctors, engineers BUT they will be in the minority.
We need to be honest about race, it makes life much easier to understand. Races develop IQ to suit their environments; Europe looks like Europe and Africa looks like Africa because of the IQ of the people in the nations, not because of anything else. Simples.

I am currently communicating with a young Somali girl who is attending university. She is a Muslim and proud of it. I believe she will make a great contribution to British society given half a chance down the track. In, saying that, I have to say since I have been communicating with her, I have researched information on Somalis in the UK. It does not take much to establish she probably lives in London, as the vast majority do. They do so probably for two reasons. One, they are with other people from Somalia, who have a similar culture, language and religion. Two, their religion tells them not to integrate with the west and not to become friends with non Muslims. The problem is they are a society who has the highest rate of unemployment in the UK, both men and women. Therefore they are quite happy to live on benefits. Also there drop out rate at schools is abysmal as well. While your government can be criticised for not doing enough, the fact is some people don’t want to work. Arabs, in self appraisal of their own work ethic say the same thing about themselves.Some people are just flat out lazy. You can get them in all cultures and races but, in the case of the Somalis, the statistics speak for themselves. So there is no point in labeling everybody who makes a negative comment. At some point, we all have to accept responsibility for what we do and how we act. Somalis included.
I had the misfortune of living in and around the Stockwell area for a number of years. I’m afraid to say of the people of different ethnic backgrounds the Somali people were the hardest to be around and to be honest tolerate. Gangs of feral boys and girls robbing people on buses routinely. Men that just sit in cafes and hang around doing nothing other than qat all day. You only have to take a trip into Brixton and see the hideous halal butcher shops and the unpleasant environment they create. Caribbean black people brought culture and a community to Brixton. Somalis have brought nothing other than fear and loathing. They are largely disliked by the African and Caribbean communities. I feel sorry for the few no doubt good people who are upset by these posts but sadly they are tarnished by a massive problem within their own community which many will not acknowledge. They have brought mayhem wherever they go and far from wanting to start a new life aided and abetted by the British government, councils and British people they would rather turn everywhere into a new Mogadishu. If they really were fleeing awful persecution and death and destruction why do they try to recreate the same here. You only have to look at the disgusting mess they have made in Little Somalia in Streatham. It is a dangerous place and to be avoided at all costs.

They contribute absolutely nothing to our society, and it’s the same story wherever they go. They are poorly educated, ignorant, lazy, entitled, rude, and extremely prone to criminality. Their language skills are abysmal; for proof just look at the terrible spelling, grammar, and punctuation from most of the Somalis on this thread (M.W. being an honourable exception). I suspect that, as Mahmood Smith says, it does indeed have something to do intelligence: Somalis as a group clearly lack it, and this creates enormous problems when they try to function in an advanced society; most of them simply cannot, and the rest of us end up having to pay for them and the countless problems they cause. That’s why almost no one, be they native or immigrant, has a good word to say about them.
Let’s be honest and recognize that the reason Somalia is such a terrible place to live is precisely because it’s full of Somalis. We must not allow any more in, and we should look very seriously at ridding ourselves of those already here.

Never had any slaves, nor benefitted from invading. Grandparents started work at 12years old and worked 60 hours a week or went to the work-house. No work meant no food, no housing. Parents started work at 14 and lived in rooms with shared bathroom, when married. We shared beds, had no holidays/pictures/ballet classes/piano lessons – ever, sometimes had no money for food for weeks. No immigrant lives like this, but many indigenous UK people would rather starve than use the benefit system. Not so the migrant population, who should return to their own country if they fail to contribute to the economy.
Why then does the government allow those with no valid reason for not working not to work and pay them for shirking?
If the immigrants have the money to come to the UK why can they not support themselves? How could those, purporting to fleeing war, afford to arrive from Africa? Are they just the corrupt ones? The ones living off everybody else’s sweat? Trampling over the bodies of everyone else to save themselves? It appears so.
I am in agreement about the rudeness and lack of respect shown by the Somalis for the country and the people who live here. They shout and talk loudly, they spit, they push, they have too many children and so they take the housing and services that should go to indigenous people, who are pushed to the back of the queue. So do the Bangladeshis and the Nigerians and the Pakistanis and the Eastern Europeans and others who have arrived and do everything to stop the indigenous UK peoples from maintaining their customs whilst enforcing their ‘cultures’ on us, e.g. knives, graffiti, religious specific dress, drugs, spitting everywhere, steal anything not nailed down, humiliating women, etc., and we lose Christmas and Easter festivals. None of these migrants integrate as they see themselves as superior. They do not see the culture as they do not look for it or recognise it, and if they do they despise it. Anything they don’t understand is declared racist, yet insults in their own languages fly towards the host population for anybody to hear, should they understand – prosecutions? No.
As they don’t integrate they cannot speak the language and speak to their children in their native language, so depriving the English speakers in schools of a proper education as the ‘foreign speakers’ get help to the cost of the others who don’t, but who are slowed down. Likewise they need interpreters for any interface with the host country (including school and university exams), but pay for nothing.
None of them appreciate the only reason that the benefits systems are in place is because my grandparents and those of other indigenous people created them instead of warring, stealing and cheating their compatriots.
Integration can only occur when there is a true mix. As long as there are marriages within the family or tribe, that will not happen. Within a ghettoised community, the ghetto culture perseveres. When there is an inter-culture marriage and each of the spouses is allowed to bring in their culture equally, the offspring can benefit from the social history of each parent. Without social history, there is no understanding. Without social history of the indigenous population, in centuries the immigrants’ descendants will still be living in their own culture, like the Jewish families in Hendon and Prestwich who think they are English, but are really still based in medieval Germany and are completely ignorant of many aspects of English life and Christianity.
