The “we know what’s best for you” politically-correct elite have won a new battle in their war against smokers. Every time they constrain our freedom – whether it be with smoking or eating junk food – they claim to be acting in our and the country’s best interests. But are they? Someone who smokes and/or gorges themselves on junk food will die 10 to 15 years before a healthy person. That will save taxpayers between £50,000 and £100,000 in pension costs. Of course, they’ll have higher medical costs while they’re alive. But has anyone ever done a proper cost/benefit analysis to see whether it might actually be better for us to allow the unhealthy to smoke and eat themselves to an early death rather than constantly hectoring them and taking away their pleasures to try and keep them on this earth for as long as possible?
Perhaps it would be cheaper for us and more fun for them if we let them smoke and drink their way to an early meeting with their Maker?
