Most of us have now realised that our politicians are lying, thieving, arrogant scum. But when buying property too many of us still naively believe thatour surveyor and lawyer are acting for us. Thiscan bea costly mistake. You must remember that your surveyor and conveyancing lawyer will probably only work for you once in their lives. However, they will probably work with the estate agent trying to flog you a property every month and maybe every week. So surveyors’ and lawyers’ interests are more in keeping up a good relationship with estate agents, than in worrying about your welfare – if asurveyor were constantly brutally honest about the real condition of properties, they’d soon see their work dry up as they wouldn’t get any recommendations from estate agents.
I found this out when buying my flat. Both the surveyor and lawyer hid the truth about the property from me. But when I threatenedboth of themwith legal action, the surveyor handed over 2,500 and the lawyer 4,000 on condition that I didn’t expose their dishonesty. You have been warned.
