In most private-sector companies about 20% of all money spent is wasted. In the public sector this is usually over 30%. So with our government now spending about £750bn a year, at least £200bn a year – £4bn a week – is being wasted. If you think I’m exaggerating, remember Gordon Liar Brown more than doubled public spending from £350bn to £750bn. But we didn’t get public services that were twice as good as before – most of the money was wasted on huge increases in the number of managers and bureaucrats and in giving them massive salary rises.
So is Osborne tackling the £200bn a year waste? No. Instead he is increasing VAT and other taxes. Before the election I had a meeting with one of Osborne’s advisers – Claire Perry – now an MP. I told her how Osborne could quickly save at least £50bn, but was politely ignored. My impression was that Osborne has surrounded himself with yes-men and yes-women – so our taxes will keep going up and the public-sector can keep on wasting about £200bn a year.
