(Monday/Tuesday blog) I did this story before (January 2015). But, in case you haven’t seen it, here it is again.
One explanation for *sl*mic fundamentalism and the ensuing daily terrorism that’s never proffered is stupidity and insanity.
A never-spoken-about problem with M*sl*ms is their inbreeding as a result of their long and deeply-ingrained practice of marrying first cousins — a practice that has been prohibited in the Judeo-Christian tradition since the days of Moses.
In 2005, Labour MP Anne Cryer called for first-cousin marriages to be banned. Then in 2008, the UK’s environment minister Phil Woolas again sounded the alarm about this “very sensitive” issue that is “rarely debated”. Referring to the culture of arranged marriages between cousins in the M*sl*m immigrant community, Woolas said: “If you have a child with your cousin the likelihood is there’ll be a genetic problem.”
Woolas, whose views are supported by medical experts, said most cases occur in immigrant families from rural Pakistan, where up to half of all marriages involve first cousins. Woolas said: “If you talk to any primary care worker they will tell you that levels of disability among the . . . Pakistani population are higher than the general population. And everybody knows it’s caused by first cousin marriage.”
The problem is made worse by generational inbreeding. As Woolas put it, “Many of the parents themselves and many of the public spokespeople are themselves products of first cousin marriages.” That would explain why research for BBC2’s Newsnight in November 2005 showed that British Pakistanis accounted for 3.4% of all births but 30% of all British children with recessive genetic disorders.
But the problem isn’t exclusive to Pakistani M*sl*ms as Woolas seems to imply, but is pandemic among M*sl*ms across the world.
According to Nicolai Sennels. a Danish psychologist who has done extensive research into M*sl*m inbreeding, close to half of all M*sl*ms in the world are inbred:
70% of Pakistanis are inbred.
67% of Saudi Arabians are inbred.
64% of those living in Jordan and Kuwait are inbred.
63% of Sudanese are inbred.
60% of Iraqis are inbred.
54% of M*sl*ms in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar are inbred.
25-30% of those in Turkey are inbred.
In England, at least 55% of Pakistani immigrants are married to their first cousins.
In Denmark the number of inbred Pakistani immigrants is around 40%.
Sennels points out that cousin marriage was sanctioned by M*h*mmad and has been going on now for 50 generations (1,400 years) in the M*sl*m world. This practice of inbreeding will never go away in the M*sl*m world since M*h*mmad is the ultimate example and authority on all matters, including marriage. To M*sl*ms, any scientific research conducted in the last 1,400 years is irrelevant if it contradicts the teachings of their ridiculous book.
Sennels warns that massive inbreeding in M*sl*m culture may well have done virtually irreversible damage to the M*sl*m gene pool, including extensive damage to M*sl*ms’ intelligence, sanity, and health. (Similar effects were seen in the Pharaonic dynasties in ancient Egypt and in the British royal family, where inbreeding was the norm for a significant period of time.)
Below are the consequences of inbreeding:
Birth and birth defects:
100% increase in the risk of stillbirths.
50% increase in the risk that the child dies during labor.
The risk of autosomal recessive genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis and spinal muscular atrophy is 18 times higher.
The risk of death due to malformations is 10 times higher.
Physical and mental retardation and illnesses:
The closer the blood relative, the higherthe risk of mental and physical retardation and schizophrenic illness.
The closer the blood relative, the higher the risk of schizophrenic illness, i.e., insanity.
Social abilities develop much slower in inbred babies. An academic paper published in the Indian National Science Academyfound that “the onset of various social profiles like visual fixation, social smile, sound seizures, oral expression and hand-grasping are significantly delayed among the new-born inbred babies.”
Research shows that if one’s parents are cousins, intelligence goes down 10-16 IQ points. The risk of having an IQ lower than 70, the official demarcation for being classified as “retarded,” increases by 400% among children of cousin marriages.
All of which would explain the following phenomena among M*sl*ms:
1 out of every 3 Somalis are mentally ill.
More than 40% of the patients in Denmark‘s biggest ward for clinically insane criminals have an immigrant (i.e., M*sl*m) background.
One-third of all handicapped people in Copenhagen have a “foreign” (i.e., M*sl*m) background.
In Denmark, psychologist Sennels’ native country, “non-Western” immigrants (who are mainly M*sl*m) are more than 300% more likely to fail the intelligence test required for entrance into the Danish army.
In Denmark, M*sl*m children are grossly overrepresented among children with special needs. One-third of the budget for Danish schools is consumed by special education.
64% of school children with Arabic parents in Denmark are still illiterate after 10 years in the Danish school system. The immigrant drop-out rate in Danish high schools is twice that of the native-born.
The U.S. is not immune. According to Sennels, “One study based on 300,000 Americans shows that the majority of M*sl*ms in the USA have a lower income, are less educated, and have worse jobs than the population as a whole.”
M*sl*ms’ average lower IQ means a lowered ability to enjoy and produce knowledge and abstract thinking, which would explain why:
The Arab world translates just 330 books every year, about 20% of what Greece alone did before the economic crash of 2007/8. In the last 1,200 years of *sl*m, just 100,000 books have been translated into Arabic, about what Spain used to do in a single year.
7 out of 10 Turks have never even read a book.
Only 9 M*sl*ms had ever won the Nobel Prize, and 5 of those 9 were for the “Peace Prize.”
According to Naturemagazine, M*sl*m countries produce just 10% of the world average when it comes to scientific research (measured by articles per million inhabitants).
Sennels concludes: “The troubling reality being referred to is the widespread practice of M*sl*m inbreeding and the birth defects and social ills that it spawns.
The tragic effect of the Left’s control of the boundaries of debate is that any discussion about vital issues such as these marks an individual as an “*sl*mophobe” and a “racist.”
A person who dares to point at the pathology of inbreeding in the M*sl*m community is accused of whipping up hatred against M*sl*m people.
But all of this could not be further from the truth. To fight against inbreeding anywhere is to defend humanity and to defend innocent babies from birth defects….
Let us keep in mind that M*sl*ms are the first — though maybe not the biggest — victims of *sl*m….
In fact, it is the Left’s callous silence on this issue (and on so many others) that exposes who is truly “anti-M*sl*m.”
Incidentally, our MPs are always keen to get to get their opinions on TV and in the press. But curiously, when Anna Cryer (2005) and Phil Woolas (2008) mentioned the problem of first-cousin marriages amongst M*sl*ms, all our other MPs suddenly seemed to become invisible.
As for the useless NHS, which is always issuing instructions to us proles on how to live (less alcohol, more exercise, less junk foods etc). when asked about the problem of M*sl*m first-cousin marriages, the NHS refused to comment saying only that this was “a matter for local communities”.

(Friday, Saturday, Sunday blog) I’ve spent most of my working life as a management consultant trying to scrape a living to support myself and my family. But when I wrote two whistle-blowing books – PLUNDERING THE PUBLIC SECTOR about how consultants extract millions from stupid public-sector bosses and RIP-OFF about how consultants con their private-sector clients out of millions – I was, of course, blacklisted and would never be allowed to work as a consultant again.
So, I began wondering how I could use the skills of analysis and presentation of data, I had learnt as a consultant, to expose the stupidity, waste, greed and incompetence of those who have power over us. I started writing books. My thinking was that with each book I would find organisations that agreed with my point of view and would thus help me with my books.
How naively wrong I was. Each time I went near an organisation asking for cooperation a brick wall went up. There was no way they were going to allow an outsider, however well intentioned, onto their precious, jealously-guarded territory.
The Conservative Party: First up were the Tories. When I returned to the UK after 20 years abroad, everyone was praising Gordon Brown calling him the ‘Iron Chancellor’ and journalists were swallowing the line about how Brown was a Presbyterian Scot who would never waste taxpayers’ money. But from what I could see, Brown was a financially-incontinent, economically-illiterate liar and buffoon and so I planned a book SQUANDERED How Gordon Brown is wasting over one trillion pounds of your money. My agent sold this to a publisher and I then contacted the Tories to see if they could help with my book. I met with two Tory MPs and one senior adviser and the answer was always the same: ‘F**k off! And stop wasting our time! We have important work to do’.
Nevertheless, I did write SQUANDERED and have been told that the Tories asked over 150 parliamentary questions based on my book. But at no time did anyone in the Conservative Party help me or contact me.
An organisation claiming to represent NHS patients: Next was an organisation claiming to represent the interests of NHS patients. I had helped write and had published at my own expense a book by a Midlands housewife, Amanda Steane, called WHO CARES? The book described how her husband Paul had been driven to kill himself after a catastrophic series of NHS hospital blunders and how the hospital had tried to cover up their incompetence. Amanda only found out the truth about Paul’s care when a whistle-blowing nurse sent her anonymously a copy of a blood test the hospital denied existed and which proved their culpability.
Once the book was published, I expected this organisation to work with me and Amanda to fight NHS incompetence. No way! The organisation didn’t want to have anything to do with Amanda or me. I suppose they didn’t want us trespassing on their territory.
Money laundering: I’m now considering writing a book about money laundering and have met the same “get lost!” attitude from organisations claiming they are leading the fight against money laundering.
The charity industry: This tendency for those, supposedly working for our common good, to desperately defend their own positions, jobs and interests is most clearly demonstrated in Britain’s bloated charity industry. There are over 195,000 registered charities in the UK and another 191,000 which don’t need to register as they are too small. How many charities do we really need? Maybe 5,000? At most 10,000?
Many of these charities should be merged to cut down management and administration costs and release more money for real charity work. But that would mean thousands of well-paid charity executives and managers with mortgages and school fees and expensive holidays to pay for losing their jobs. So charity mergers seldom happen and billions of pounds of the money we give to charity is wasted.
Let’s take prostate cancer. For years three prostate cancer charities competed to get donations. To their credit, these three charities did realise they were all doing exactly the same thing and merged. The merger allowed them to massively reduce the millions spent on management, administration and fundraising and hugely increase the amount spent on real charitable work.
But, despite us having perhaps 180,000 charities too many, such mergers are almost never happen.
The poverty industry: Here are the mission statements of six of the largest anti-poverty charities:
Ooops! They’re all the same! But there’s no way any of these would consider merging – too many well-paid executive and management jobs would be lost and there’d be fewer opportunities for charity bosses to get their knighthoods and peerages.
At one time, it was estimated that there were over 4,000 charities active in Ethiopia and over 3,000 working in Haiti. All these charities would have had well-paid staff flying in staying at hotels or renting villas in the most exclusive parts of the countries’ capitals. They’d all have had their convoys of 4x4s and their guides and interpreters and servants and taxfree salaries with generous overseas allowances and expenses. The Lords of Poverty live well as we suckers pay for their gilded lifestyles!
I was ridiculously naive when I started writing books. I have now learnt:
Beware the self-righteous and the holier-than-thou! They are usually only in it for themselves!

Oh dear, I fear that fragrant Angela ‘Hitler’ Merkel has just been screwed by a greasy Turk. Not literally screwed, of course. Even a M*sl*m wouldn’t put his little M*h*mmed into Merkel’s bushy nether regions. I mean metaphorically screwed.
I don’t quite know exactly what happened at the latest EU talks last weekend with Turkey about stopping the migrant crisis.
But I think things went something like this:
Firstly, the useless EU leaders led by Donald Tusk almost reached some kind of deal with Turkish prime minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
Then last Sunday night the (IMHO) greasy, lying, devious Turkish scumbag invited Merkel for dinner. The result of the dinner was that the Turks tore up the previous almost-deal and made new demands that Merkel cravenly accepted.
So now we have the EU agreeing to:
resettle a Syrian migrant into the EU from camps in Turkey (they’re not refugees as they’ve already reached a safe country) for every migrant returned from Greece to Turkey
about 77 million, mostly impoverished M*sl*m Turks will get visa-free travel to any EU country by June this year. So will millions of Pakistanis, Africans, Indians, Somalis and other such garbage provided they can pay fifty quid or so for a fake Turkish passport (EU border officials will be instructed not to examine Turkish passports too closely just as the police in EU countries are instructed to turn a blind eye to robberies and rapes committed by M*sl*ms)
the EU will give Turkey another three billion euros (in addition to the three billion already pledged) to supposedly help it house the migrant masses. Most of this money will, as usual, be stolen by the corrupt and increasingly despotic ruler Erdogan and his family and cronies and certainly won’t go anywhere near any migrants or refugees or whatever you want to call them
the EU will accelerate the admission into the EU of Turkey with its 77 million backward, uneducated, violent, intolerant, intellectually-challenged, lazy, unemployable M*sl*ms and millions more with fake Turkish identity papers
Other EU leaders are said to be apoplectic about Merkel running the EU as if she was its dictator. Yet, however much they bitch and moan, the cowards always capitulate to what the ugly German Fuhrerin demands.
Merkel claims to be slowing the M*sl*m invasion of Europe. What she’s actually doing is legalising it in order to conceal it.
Here’s Nigel Farage – as usual the only person who sees the utter lunacy of the EU giving in to Turkish blackmail. But Farage is only reacting to the EU’s initial negotiating position with Turkey. This brief (2 mins) speech was given before we found out about treacherous, liar Merkel’s dirty backroom deal:
There are many reasons to vote “Leave”.
But just the admission of primitive, backward, impoverished *sl*mic cesspit Turkey (and anyone with a fake Turkish passport) into the EU would in itself be sufficient reason to leave this crumbling madhouse and become a free independent country again.
The population of the Arab world is exploding, both figuratively in that it is increasing frighteningly fast, but also literally as some Arab men are blowing themselves up as they seek a fast track to Paradise and their 72 virgins who, according to some aging bearded cretin (sorry, I meant ‘respected *sl*mic cleric’) “have skin like alabaster and are not tainted by menstrual blood or faeces”.

That poses a problem for Arab leaders – how to find useful work for their teeming and ever increasing millions.
Of course, some countries – Syria, Libya and Iraq – have launched rudimentary population control programmes:
But this has hardly slowed the rapidly increasing number of Allahu-Akhbar-screaming lunatics intent on conquering our planet and destroying civilisation.
For a start, as I explained in a blog a few weeks ago, the average IQ of Arabs (82), though above that of sub-equatorial Africans (69), is far below that of Europeans and Chinese (100). Most of these Arabs are thicker than the thickest person you’ve ever met. Maybe that’s why they adore their hideous, violent, intolerant, bloody, supremacist death cult which they mistakenly call a ‘religion’?
The women are not the issue. Most of them are locked away till they’re 15 or 16 and then married off to be the third or fourth baby factory for lecherous 50- or 60-year-old men.
It’s the young men that are the problem.
I recently read a book about Saudi Arabia’s efforts to encourage foreign investment creating jobs in that country and why this was a failure as foreign firms found ‘It was not only that decades of state largesse had made the younger generation disinclined to work, but also that the education system, which overemphasized religious instruction, had failed to give them the skills they needed to work productively’.
So, I tried to imagine what a job interview for a US company looking for an apprentice maintenance engineer for say a new air-conditioning factory or car factory might look like:
Interviewer:Abdul, I see you came top of your class. That’s impressive.
Abdul:God looked kindly upon me and gave me that result, Inshallah! He who is the only God, and is the God I serve, will use me an his instrument to bring death and disaster to the filthy Jews and the bastard sons and daughters of America, the Great Satan. Interviewer:Um, yes, of course. And what were your favourite subjects at school, Abdul?

One story I liked this week was that Padma Lakshmi the former American/Indian model and former fourth wife of the famous Indian/British writer Sir Salman Rushdie has herself now written a book about their brief three-year marriage accusing him of being “jealous, needy and sexually insatiable“.

I will make this simple, love, by only giving two multiple choices. Did he marry you because of:

B) Unlimited opportunities to play with your tits and shove his (viagra-assisted?) helmeted warrior of love into your mouth, pussy and a certain other orifice we don’t mention in polite company?

(I suspect that for filthy old lecher Sir Salman the answer was always clearly ‘B’. But perhaps in order to bed his lovely fourth ex-wife, he managed to convince her the answer was ‘A’. And such a difference of views about the purpose of the marriage was never going to lead to a successful, long-term relationship)
Here’s a thought for you, former fourth Mrs Rushdie. Judging from what I’ve seen from the behaviour of Indian men in the Land of Smells – where you always have four, five or six men taking just one girl for boom boom – you’re lucky the famous scribbler Sir Salman didn’t invite round all his Indian friends for a bit of fun with you and your various orifices. Ooops! Maybe he did and that’s why your marriage hit the rocks?

Still, no doubt you walked away with plenty of money from Sir Salman for each time the great writer plunged his mighty (viagra-enhanced?) pork sword into your body during your courtship and then three-year marriage.

The elites are queuing up to tell us ignorant, unwashed proles that we must vote to abandon our country’s sovereignty and stay in their undemocratic, corrupt, wasteful EU.
We’ve had multi-millionaire Lord Rose, head of the Remain campaign, admit that if we left the EU British wages would rise and that would be bad for his businesses which prefer to import more qualified EU workers who are willing to accept lower pay than their British counterparts.
Then there was multi-millionaire Lord Mandelson, a former EU trade commissioner who claims not to have been involved in the decision to lower import tariffs on Russian aluminium – a decision that greatly enriched one of Mr Mandelscum’s Russian oligarch friends on whose massive yacht Mandelscum had holidayed.
And there have been a bunch of the usual leftie luvvies like Emma ‘Global Warming’ Thompson.
The elites love the EU. It provides low-paid workers for their businesses, low-paid builders and plumbers and nannies etc for their multi-million pound homes, the opportunity to buy luxury holiday homes in France and Italy and people like Mandelscum can earn millions by lobbying their mates in the EU to change EU laws to suit their powerful clients – usually big businesses and billionaires with dubious fortunes.
Plus the elites don’t have to use our overburdened NHS, they don’t have to put their children into our crowded failing schools, they don’t have to rely on our overworked police to guard their well-protected multi-million pound homes, they don’t have to live in areas being swamped by Eastern European and M*sl*m migrants and they don’t see their wages being pushed down by competition from EU workers.
But most of all, the elites love the EU because it crushes democracy. The elites are always afraid some popular outsider like Donald Trump or Nigel Farage will shake the status quo that has made the elites rich and powerful. The EU over-rides democracy as, the few times EU countries have voted against EU plans, they’re just told to vote again till they get the right answer or if their governments oppose EU plans, the EU just replaces their government with unelected EU bureaucrats.
I quite liked a comment by a Times reader in response to yet another article by one of the elites instructing us plebs to vote to remain in the EU. Here’s the comment:
I am continually told the UK must be in the EU to manipulate/change the rules. So how come Merkel just does what she wants yet we have to obey the rules?? I have no say in blocking the one million refugees/economic migrants yet I am continually told by the insane “you have to be in it to change it” club that I and we as a nation can change the way EU leaders behave and think.
It is the most ridiculous and stupid insane statement ever.
The UK Is now being told to stump up another £65 million plus…….when will it end ….the UK is broke yet we borrow money to pay for refugees/economic migrants from other countries whilst our own people are suffering. My mum always told me charity begins at home. You make sure you and your family are sorted first.
My son is 29 and still lives at home. Why ? Because of low wages driven down by EU. Because no social housing is available as it goes to those who score the most points on the biased housing system which inevitably means that migrants/refugees get social housing first……..despite never having paid into the system.
My daughter and her boyfriend pay extortionate rent and are both just above minimum wage yet cannot get social housing …..again because of the rigged housing system. He was homeless as a single person some years ago and they told him to live on the streets or ask a neighbour in the street where he used to live could they take him in. Yet we find homes for migrants/refugees at a drop of a hat and fully furnish/equip them with all the mod cons.
So myself (a pensioner who pays tax on just above min wage level), my son, my daughter & her boyfriend all paying tax, all just existing are not allowed to claim any benefits, not allowed any social housing ……yet our money goes to migrants/refugees …….this all goes against the original principles of the welfare state……it’s a welfare state for BRITONS NOT THE REST OF THE WORLD.
My children will never be able to buy a home. The UK is finished. The EU is all about corporate greed and using cheap labour. It does not represent the working man/woman in this country. The Labour Party has turned its back on the working population and is now a loony fringe party. The Tories are rabid pro Europe business fanatics, the LibDems are ….well the LibDems (God help us) ….. We need a Trump in this country to give the establishment a good kicking before we lose our sovereignty and the ability to govern ourselves for good.
I cannot believe that our spineless, gutless politicians who we pay to represent us have rolled over for the EU and big business. They are a load of Judases and should be taken out and disposed of.
We must get out of this travesty that is the EU now.
Conclusion
The EU Referendum is the last chance we will ever get to stop the elites stealing our country, our democracy, our freedom and what little is left of our sovereignty.

But with Mad Angela Merkel’s decision (made unilaterally without consulting any other EU leaders) to invite the whole population of Syria and anyone claiming to be Syrian to Europe. Over the last 30 days, our murdering Muzzie friends carried out 119 attacks in 19 countries killing 1,388 innocents and injuring a further 1,605 innocents. They also made good use of the extra day in February by murdering at least 40 innocents and injuring a further 58 innocents on just that one day.
Oh, and I suspect not a single one of these attacks will be covered by the Burkha Broadcasting Corporation or the *sl*mophiliacs at Channel 4. If one Brit so much as said ‘boo’ to a woman in a Burkha, we’d be getting 24/7 stories about the danger of *sl*mophobia in Britain. But these murderous M*sl*m madmen wipe out 1,388 in 30 days (46 people a day) and injure a further 1,605 (53 a day) and there is hardly a mention of this on any of our major news channels.
Hopefully the list below will give some idea of the stupidity and barbarity of these subhuman religious maniacs.
The story I like is from Iraq on 11 February when, in typical example of ‘*sl*mic justice’ (an oxymoron if there ever was one), four women are stoned to death in Iraq for adultery – after having been raped. Who says Muzzies haven’t got a sense of humour?
And all this mayhem, slaughter, misery, suffering and bloodshed was done in the name of their putrid paedophile prophet and ludicrous book of murderous garbage.
Still, David ‘Dhimmi’ Cameron tells us that *sl*m is a ‘Religion of Peace’. So there’s clearly no need to worry about the consequences of the *sl*mic invasion and takeover of Europe:

When you’re a member of Merkel’s invading M*sl*m millions, a classic trick is to claim you’re under sixteen years old. This has two benefits. Firstly, it greatly improves your chances of being allowed to stay in Europe and live off crime and state handouts for the rest of your life. And secondly, it brings you into contact with other supposed and real children and thus gives you access to under-age girls you can rape whenever you want while the authorities desperately try to look the other way so they don’t offend you and your wonderful culture.
So, here’s a charming story of our times from Germany where the Germans have mysteriously suddenly discovered that two ‘child’ migrants arrested in January after a 12-year-old girl was forced to perform sex acts with them are now thought to be adults at least 21 years of age.
The two men who have not been named but are reported to be Iranian citizens were officially 15 and 16-years-old at the time of their arrest four weeks ago. One of the men has now been proved to be “at least 21 years old” through dental examinations, while the second is also thought to be an adult.
(But hold on a minute. If the men were Iranian citizens, what the f*** were they doing in a refugee centre anyway? Iran is not at war with anyone – yet. These filthy M*sl*m scumbags should have been thrown out of Germany as soon as they arrived. Why were they, and hundreds of thousands like them, even allowed more than 24 hours in Germany?)
The men were admitted to a children’s migrant aid centre when they arrived in Dusseldorf last year after they had managed to fool the German government over their true age. Once in the centre they were allowed into the classroom alongside other children from Dusseldorf, and they were able there to gain access to the much younger girl.
She was “compelled and forced into sexual acts” over the course of some days, said the prosecutor. Germany’s Express reports that a six year old boy who discovered that the girl was being abused was threatened with having his throat cut for telling on the pair.
At the time of their arrest the abuse had been established after the girl had given testimony and she had undergone a gynaecological investigation, a doctor giving his professional opinion. The girl was moved for “protection” to another facility outside of the city.
The authority responsible for the accommodation and facility have blamed severe overcrowding for the events that allowed the men to attack the girl, with report stating the city child protection centre is “bursting at the seams”. Chief officer for youth services John Horn said of the attack that children are normally segregated by age and sex, but are able to mingle in “common spaces”.
After these M*sl*m garbage had been doing a bit of raping, it seems to have been rather easy to prove they were adults. It seems a pity that nobody thought of checking their real age before they were let loose on vulnerable under-age girls.
Sweden has, I think, about 35,000 of these scum all claiming to be ‘children’. Once they get their Swedish residency and demand their human rights that their two or three wives and five to ten children join them in Sweden, will anyone start to question whether they really were ‘children’ when they arrived in Sweden? No. Probably not. I thought so. We wouldn’t want to be *sl*mophobic and offend them, would we?
Osama Bin Laden must be kicking himself as he realises he could have conquered cowardly Europe without a shot being fired or a bomb being exploded. Merkel’s M*sl*m millions will overwhelm us and start the great European civil war that will destroy European civilisation.
(A slightly different subject today) The worldwide diet industry – books, special foods, dieting programmes, weight-watching groups etc – is probably worth over £30bn a year. But is it all just a pointless, self-serving scam?
Until recently, I’ve never tried to diet. Though I have tried to control my weight through exercising five days a week. But I’ve designed a new diet that both reduces calorie intake and increases metabolic rate (the speed at which we use the calories we have consumed), so I decided to give dieting a go. My aim was to lose 10 kilos (about 12% of my body weight) in three months.
In addition to my diet, I also increased by daily exercise from around 1,000 calories a day to between 1,500 and 1,800 calories a day.
At first things went swimmingly. I lost 7 kilos in 8 weeks and it looked like my 10 kilos target would be easily reached. Then suddenly everything stopped. Despite further increasing my exercise and keeping to the diet, my weight at first stayed constant and then even started to creep up a little.
Having looked around on Google, this is what I suspect happens when a person goes on a diet and/or increases their level of calorie usage:
It’s quite easy to lose around 5% to 7% of your body weight through reducing calorie intake and increasing calories used. Hence most diets are effective for the first few weeks. But we’re at a unique time in human history. Whatever the season and whatever the weather, most people in the world have enough to eat.
However, for tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of years, this wasn’t the case. For perhaps 99% or more of human history, humans have had to live through times of plenty and times of food scarcity. And our bodies have learnt how to adapt. When food is scarce, our metabolic rate slows down so we can survive despite taking in fewer calories. I suppose this process is a mini version of the way some animals slow down their bodies when hibernating.
So, what does this mean for dieting?
It means that when you start a diet, ideally combined with an increase in exercise, you will definitely lose weight if you use more calories than you consume. But after a few weeks your body will adapt to you taking in fewer calories and using more calories than before and you’ll reach a new equilibrium so won’t lose any more weight.
But then comes the cruel part. Your body has now adapted to the reduced calorie intake and increase in calories used. So, if you slack off on your diet and/or reduce your level of exercise and return to the way you lived before your diet and exercise regime, your body’s slower metabolic rate will ensure you rapidly put on weight faster than you did before you started your diet and exercise regime.
Of course, I’m not a scientist or a nutrition expert. And millions of hugely obese, obscenely waddling fat mountains need to get a grip, eat less and exercise more. And it probably doesn’t matter which, if any, diet they follow, as long as they reduce their consumption of junk food and get their lard-arses away from their sofas and flat-screen TVs.
But for people who are fairly close to their genetically defined weight, I have a feeling that what I’ve written above is something approaching the truth – diets will cause us to lose weight in the short term. But they can’t really work over a longer period because of the way our bodies adapt if we start using more calories than we consume. Moreover, I suspect that most people in the highly lucrative £30bn a year diet industry know this.
However, this is a truth none of the magazine articles and diet books and diet programmes will ever tell us as this would destroy their extremely profitable £30bn a year business. So, the magazines keep on churning out articles telling us how we can get the perfect body and smart people make millions writing books about their particular new supposed ‘wonder diet’.
