Friday-weekend blog
I asked Professor Google a question:
Do most civilisations collapse due to external forces or from rot within?
Here’s the good Professor’s answer:
Historians and sociologists generally agree that civilizations collapse due to a combination of internal decay (“rot”) and external pressures, rather than a single cause. However, historical consensus heavily emphasizes that internal vulnerabilities weaken a society first, leaving it unable to survive external shocks.
Internal Factors (The “Rot”)
Most major theorists—such as Arnold Toynbee and Joseph Tainter—point out that civilizations often break down from within:
- Diminishing Returns of Complexity: As societies grow, they build heavier bureaucracies and demand more resources just to function, eventually hitting a point where the cost of maintenance outweighs the benefits.
- Economic Strains and Inequality: Wealth concentration, over-taxation, and currency debasement (such as the shaving of silver in Roman coins) destroy trade confidence and social trust.
- Environmental and Resource Degradation: Overuse of land, deforestation, soil salinization (like in ancient Sumer), or climate shifts reduce a region’s carrying capacity.
- Political Instability and Corruption: Factional infighting, weak leadership, succession crises, and a loss of institutional legitimacy make governance dysfunctional
External Forces (The Catalyst)
External forces—such as foreign invasions, rival armies, pandemics, or sudden natural disasters—rarely act in isolation.
- Historians note that a robust, unified civilization can typically absorb a severe plague, a failed harvest, or a military assault.
- External pressures usually deliver the final blow only after internal structures have already hollowed out the state’s resilience. For instance, the Western Roman Empire faced external migrations and invasions by Germanic tribes, but it did so while crippled by decades of civil war, economic inflation, and political fragmentation.
Some readers might be inclined to see many aspects of the West’s current self-immolation in the above answer from our favourite professor?
What seems to me to be odd is that it is absolutely clear why the West – the greatest, most creative and most productive civilisation the world has ever seen – is moving towards collapse:
- societal/cultural destruction due to mass Third-World immigration
- economic suicide due to absurd Net Zero climate-catastrophist policies
- political self-harm through overregulation due to asphyxiation caused by increasingly unaffordable bloated self-serving political, bureaucratic and media elites
- you could probably add a few more to this short list
We know all this. We can see all this. Yet nothing is done to arrest our decline.
I guess we’re going to get what we deserve? And it won’t be pretty!
